The Veterans Park is maintained by the
Lake Tansi Retired Military Association made up of military retirees
of all ranks and all services.
The association was organized in May of
2001 and immediately began work on restoration of an old park
site located across from the Community Church near the offices
of the Lake Tansi Property Owners' Association.
The restoration efforts were supported
by donations from community members, other communtiy organizations,
local businesses and the POA maintenance department.
In spite of the short timeframe involved
the park was dedicated on July 4, 2001 in a very colorful ceremony.
The guest speaker for the dedication was Major General Michael
N. Farage, USAF. Honored guests included Astronaut Kevin Kregel
and two survivors of the December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor attack.
Work continued throughout the following
year and the park was re-dedicated on July 4, 2002 with the addition
of markers honoring Lake Tansi family members who had served
their nation in the military and additional flag poles installed
for the colors of each of the five uniformed services. The guest
speaker for the re-dedication was Mister Brock Hill, Cumberland
County Executive.
The underlying theme is that while in many
ways this is a "Memorial Park" it is even more significant
in that it is a living tribute to all those who have protected
our freedom by serving in the armed forces.
